Radon mitigation systems are engineered for each house. No two systems are the same because each home is unique. Our company's mitigation process is very effective, having reduced radon levels by up to 95% through creating a negative pressure underneath the home that reaches all areas of the basement.
We build mitigation systems by conducting extensive diagnostic measurements which gives us information about where to place a system and which fan to use, ensuring it treats all areas under your home.
We also provide you with a detailed report of those measurements for transparency and so you can have a report available if you sell your home.
How do we do it?
The two preferred methods are:
1) Sump pit mitigation system (seen on the right)
2) Sub-slab mitigation system (coring a 5" hole through the slab and digging out reachable dirt)
Combined with our in-depth knowledge about radon gas, these methods are very effective at reducing radon levels.
Air Exchange Systems (HRV / ERV)
This is an effective way at diluting radon gas levels from 20-50%. While we recommend HRV systems as an addition to sub-slab systems for general air quality, we do not recommend them when levels are significantly above the action limit. HRV systems are used as a trimming technique when levels are hovering around the action limit.
Caulking
It is impossible to seal out radon. Case studies have shown that levels increase within a few months of sealing. Remember, concrete has either cracked or will eventually crack.
Caulking is an important mitigation step because it improves the efficiency of the installed system by reducing conditioned air from escaping through cracks, under the home, through the pipe and out through the side of the home.
Crawl Spaces
In accessible crawl spaces, polyethylene sheeting is used to create a barrier between the dirt floor and the living space. A perforated pipe sucks on the area beneath the sheet and is vented out through the side of the house.
Be sure to test!
Radon mitigation services are recommended when a long-term test (91+ days) show a level greater than the Health Canada action limit of 200 Bq/m3.
Levels fluctuate significantly per minute, therefore we encourage everyone to make an informed mitigation decision based on long-term readings.
Remember: your neighbour might have low radon levels but you may not!
