What is included in the radon test kit?
One Radtrak3 long-term radon detector in a sealed radon-proof bag, an instruction sheet with your own login for the lab's website, and the laboratory analysis of your detector once you send it back. Radonova emails your report, usually within 5 to 10 business days of receiving it. Delivery by Canada Post is $2.61, or $15.76 with tracking, and the postage back to the lab is yours.
A listed device
The Radtrak3 is on the C-NRPP device list, the list Health Canada points homeowners to.
Lab analysis included
Radonova reads the detector in its lab and reports the average radon level over your whole test period.
From a local professional
You buy it from the C-NRPP certified professional who would do the work if your number comes back high. You can call us with questions.
How do I use a long-term radon test kit?
Open the bag, put the detector in place the same day, and register it online. Leave it for at least 91 days, then log the end date and mail it to the lab. The measurement starts the moment the bag is opened, so only open it when you are ready to place it.
Open and place it
Open the radon-proof bag before the deploy-by date printed on the detector and place it straight away, following the placement rules below.
Register it
Log in at radonline.com with the commission number and password on your sheet. Enter where the detector is, its number and the start date.
Leave it 91 days or more
Do not move it. When you are done, log back in and enter the end date and time. Your report depends on both dates.
Mail it to the lab
Send it by tracked mail to Radonova Ltd., 2555 Meadowpine Blvd., Unit 2, Mississauga, ON L5N 6C3. Note the detector number first.
Where should I put the radon detector?
On the lowest level of your home that someone spends more than 4 hours a day in, such as a living room, den or bedroom in a finished basement. Not in a kitchen or bathroom. Set it where air moves normally around it, at about the height you breathe at when sitting or standing.
| Keep the detector | Distance |
|---|---|
| Above the floor | 0.8 m to 2 m (3 to 6.5 feet) |
| Below the ceiling | At least 50 cm (20 inches) |
| From other objects | At least 20 cm (8 inches) |
| From an interior wall | At least 40 cm (16 inches) |
| From an exterior wall | At least 50 cm (20 inches) |

What happens if my radon test result is high?
Above 200 Bq/m3, Health Canada recommends reducing it, and the higher the number the sooner. We note which detector went to you when we deliver it, so we can see your result when the lab reports it. If it is over 200, we will call you to explain what it means and what your options are. You are under no obligation.
Under 100
Below the World Health Organization reference level. Most people stop here.
100 to 200
Under the Canadian guideline, but no level is risk free. Some people choose to lower it, and that is a reasonable choice.
Over 200
Health Canada recommends action. Mitigation is usually a one-day install, and it ends with a test that shows where your home landed.
Radon test kit FAQ
How much does the radon test kit cost?
$52 plus HST. That includes the detector, the lab analysis by Radonova and your written report. Delivery by Canada Post is $2.61, or $15.76 with tracking, and you choose at checkout. Mailing the detector back to the lab when your test is done is paid by you, and we recommend a tracked Canada Post service.
Is return shipping to the lab included?
No. When your test ends you mail the detector to the lab yourself, and that postage is yours. Use a tracked service so you can see it arrive. Write down the detector number before you send it.
Do you ship radon test kits outside Waterloo Region?
No. We sell kits for delivery in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph and the surrounding communities of Waterloo Region and Wellington County only. If you live somewhere else in Canada, Take Action on Radon lists test kit suppliers province by province.
When is the best time to test for radon?
Now, through the heating season. Homes are closed up from fall to spring and radon is usually at its highest, which is why Health Canada recommends a long-term test of at least 3 months, ideally between September and April.
How long until I get my result?
The lab usually reports within 5 to 10 business days of receiving the detector. Add a few days for it to travel there by mail. The report is emailed to the address you register.
Is the Radtrak3 an approved radon detector?
Yes. The Radtrak3 appears on the C-NRPP list of radon measurement devices, and Health Canada recommends using a device from that list. It is made and analysed by Radonova Laboratories.
Can I return the kit?
No. Test kits are final sale and cannot be returned or refunded, opened or not. If your kit arrives damaged, call us and we will replace it.
Do I need more than one kit?
One kit is usually enough for one home: it goes on the lowest level you spend time on. A basement apartment or other separate unit with its own living space should have its own kit.
